How often do you wash your genitals? Every day? Every other day?
It truly pains us to be the bearer of this news, but a survey has found that one in five men only wash their privates a mere two times a week or less.
If you’ve got a penis, you should be washing it once every day, so if you’re among that one in five, you need to change your ways.
Skincare specialists The Derm Review asked over 1,100 men about their hygiene and grooming habits down there, and found that one in five of them (21.6%) said they wash their intimate areas once every few days or even less often.
Elle MacLeman, Skincare Biochemist at The Derm Review warned: ‘Infrequent washing will not only result in an unpleasant smell, but it is also a breeding ground for bacteria, and can cause pain and infection.’
Thankfully, 39.7% say they wash their privates the recommended once a day, but 38.7% wash their bits twice a day, which can cause skin irritation.
The survey also found that over 60% of men are washing their penis incorrectly.
How to properly clean your penis
Personal hygiene is a big deal when it comes to dating or indeed just interacting with others – so it’s important to get it right.
You don’t want to wash too little, but you don’t want to wash too much either.
Elle said: ‘Nearly four in ten men wash their genitals twice a day, and while this may seem like good intimate hygiene practice, washing too often can actually cause problems as well.
‘The skin in this area is very sensitive and washing it more than once a day can cause irritation, dryness and itching.’
When it comes to what to use to wash down there, Elle said: ‘Warm water is absolutely fine, but if you prefer, you can also use a gentle soap or shower gel.’
